Growers may find in the market that some grow lights are with UV diodes, while some not, then what is the role of UV diodes play on plant grow lights?

What does UV do on plant grow lights?
What does UV do on plant grow lights?

1. Stimulating the synthesis of secondary metabolites:

  • Increasing the content of beneficial components: UV light irradiation can prompt plants to produce more secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and terpenoids. These secondary metabolites not only endow plants with stronger resistance to pests and diseases but also enhance the nutritional and medicinal value of plants. For example, in the cultivation of medicinal plants, the use of plant lights with UV lamp beads can increase the effective component content of medicinal materials.
  • Enriching plant flavor substances: For some fruit and vegetable plants, UV light can prompt them to synthesize more flavor substances such as aromatic substances, thereby improving the taste and aroma of fruits and enhancing the quality of fruits.

2. Changing plant morphology and growth and development:

  • Making plants stronger: Appropriate UV light irradiation will make the stems of plants stronger and the leaves thicker, thereby enhancing the mechanical strength of plants and enabling them to better resist the influence of natural environments such as wind and rain.
  • Regulating the growth cycle: UV light can affect the growth speed and flowering time of plants and other growth and development processes. For example, in the cultivation of some flowers, by controlling the irradiation time and intensity of UV light, the flowering period of flowers can be adjusted to make them bloom at a specific time to meet market demands.

3. Enhancing the stress resistance of plants:

  • Improving resistance to pests and diseases: UV light can activate the defense mechanisms in plants and make plants produce more substances resistant to pests and diseases, such as phytoalexins, thereby enhancing the resistance of plants to pests and diseases. At the same time, UV light can also inhibit the growth and reproduction of some pathogens and pests and reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases.
  • Enhancing the adaptability to environmental stress: Plants will face various environmental stresses such as drought, high temperature, and low temperature during growth. UV light irradiation can induce plants to produce more antioxidant substances such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. These substances can remove excessive reactive oxygen species generated in plants due to environmental stress, reduce oxidative damage, and improve the adaptability of plants to environmental stress.

4. Assisting in pigment synthesis:

  • Although plant photosynthesis mainly depends on red and blue light in visible light, UV light can also affect the synthesis of plant pigments to a certain extent. For example, UV light can promote the synthesis of chlorophyll in plants, improve the absorption and utilization efficiency of light energy by plants, and thereby promote plant growth.

However, the irradiation intensity and time of UV light need to be controlled within an appropriate range. Excessive UV light will cause damage to plants, such as leaf burns and inhibition of plant growth. Therefore, when using plant lights with UV lamp beads, it is necessary to make reasonable adjustments according to the needs and growth stages of different plants.
